The Director and Special Advisor, Indigenous Initiatives provides strategic leadership, coordination and administration for academic, service and community initiatives in support of Indigenous learners. The Director and Special Advisor is the lead voice on Indigenous affairs, working to increase access and collaborate with the Indigenous and Academic teams to create campuses and curricula that are inclusive of an Indigenous world view.
The incumbent serves as the lead advocate to secure funding to support the advancement of these critical priorities. The incumbent is a visionary leader who is trustworthy, politically astute, possesses strong communication skills and is able to drive results based on their ability to engage authentically with the community, establish trust and invoke a community-based and participatory approach to relationship building both within and outside of the college environment.
Reporting to the Vice-President Student & Alumni Services, the Director & Special Advisor, Indigenous Initiatives, is responsible for the leadership, advisement and implementation of strategic initiatives and priorities for Indigenous initiatives as set out in the Mohawk College Strategic Plan, Indigenous Education Protocol and as outlined in the Postsecondary Education Fund for Aboriginal Learners (PEFAL) as well as any grant based projects.
The incumbent advises the Mohawk College Senior Leadership Team and Executive Group. The incumbent is responsible for the overall partnership and relationship management between Mohawk College, and Six Nations Polytechnic, and the Indigenous community with respect to the management of Indigenous-specific initiatives attached to provincial funding. S/he is the provincial liaison with the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD), related partnerships and special projects including working closely with secondary school boards. Strategic initiatives undertaken by the college that are focused on Indigenous priorities are largely facilitated and managed by the incumbent in partnership with Indigenous leadership across the college.
The incumbent recommends strategic action relative to: Indigenous communications, marketing and promotional activities, development of proposals/business plans, Indigenous community partnerships and potential and new Indigenous initiatives. The incumbent is also accountable for the development of partnerships/articulation agreements with business, industry and other educational agencies and for initiation and on-going maintenance of positive relationships with the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development's Aboriginal Education Office (AEO).
A four-year post-secondary education in disciplines such as Aboriginal Public Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, Adult Education or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required; Master's Degree is preferred.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Minimum of nine years related, progressive work experience in Indigenous education/training, and internal/external relations related to partnership development and management.
- Proven experience working successfully with Indigenous students, organizations, leadership and community.
- Awareness of and ability to integrate strategies that facilitate a sensitive cross-cultural work and learning environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal, collaborative, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to integrate the diversity of Indigenous cultures, language, and learning within a post-secondary environment.
- Knowledge about Indigenous community life in northern, remote, rural and urban environments. The catchment area of Mohawk College requires the Director to be aware and informed about the political, economic and social conditions affecting the development and delivery of post secondary education in Ontario.
- Sound knowledge of post-secondary education including post-secondary, secondary, and First Nations run schools and educational institutes.
- Familiarity with political structure and processes of the Indigenous Nations.
- Ability to develop and implement multi-year work plans/proposals.
- Ability to organize and direct committees and working groups.
- Able to maintain confidentiality on sensitive issues relating to students and/or administration.
- Excellent written, oral and presentation skills.
- Information management skills, and ability to gather, analyze and interpret data.
- Fluent in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Prior work experience is a unionized environment is considered an asset.
- Proficiency of an Indigenous language is considered an asset.
